About the Event

The DE&S Environmental and Safety Assurance Symposium (ESAS) is the UK MOD's flagship equipment safety and environmental event held at MOD Abbey Wood, Bristol. The symposium is attended by over 500 people from the MOD, industry and academia over a two-day period.

This Year's Theme

ESAS hosts up to 350 MOD and industry delegates each day and this year will be based upon the theme of “Disruptive World Challenges” – agility in Defence safety and environmental decision making.

At ESAS 2018, we will consider the effects of disruptive technologies in a disruptive world. These include:

  • Autonomous systems
  • The future of regulation – using new technologies to promote safety
  • Safety and sustainability post Brexit
  • Digital assurance cases
  • Learning lessons from Defence accident investigation
  • Proportionality and complex systems
  • Safe and secure data systems
  • Human factors in the digital world
  • Risk reduction judgement tools and techniques
  • Contracting for safety and sustainability
  • Environmental Defence standard
  • Cyber safe & secure infrastructure
  • Safety of systems using artificial intelligence

Submitting a Paper or Workshop Abstract

EXTENDED DEADLINE! The closing date for paper and workshop abstract submissions is now 30 April 2018. Initially, we are looking for a 250 word abstract, which will be subject to review by an MOD Panel during May.

Location

ESAS 2018 will take place at the MOD Abbey Wood site which is located four miles from the centre of Bristol. The symposium will be held in the Central Facilities Building (CFB).

Upon arrival, all delegates must enter the building through the main entrance and report to the security check-in desk. Once you have completed your security check, please make your way to the conference registration desk.

As session chair you will provide the introduction to the session (a grouping of three to five papers on a similar theme) and chair the Q&A which will conclude the session. the session themes are decided by the content review panel however, we will endeavour to give the sponsor some choice over the session best suited to their company.
